This guest lecture will give students an in-depth understanding of one central notion in international relations and political science disciplines: sovereignty. During the session, students will familiarize with different understandings of sovereignty. We will zoom-in on the evolution of the concept of sovereignty, from the Peace of Westphalia, to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and post-colonial perspectives, touching upon complementary concepts of legitimacy and intervention. The lecture is complemented by interactive exercises and class discussions of the readings.
